Job Description for Microbiology Technician I
Understand and practice the principles of Good Laboratory Practices including, but not limited to:
- Aseptic technique
- Pipetting rules
- Proper hand washing procedure
Understand the flow of samples through the quantitative micro lab and be proficient at each step including:
- Weigh up
- Setting samples, including the theory and practice of serial dilutions
- Media Manufacturing
- Media and reagent selection
- Pouring plates
- Incubation
- Reading results - Plates, Petrifilm and MPNs
- Confirmation testing
Apply that understanding to test- and method-specific media and reagent selection including:
- Weigh up
- Setting samples, including the theory and practice of serial dilutions
- Media and reagent selection as it pertains to the test and method applicable
Be able to use basic laboratory equipment such as:
- Pipetting device
- Darkfield colony counter
- Tally counter
- Top loading balance
- Thermometer
Laboratory safety includes:
- Proper handling of viable bacterial and fungal cultures
- Handling of trash (biohazardous and non-biohazardous)
