BioChroma Analytical Labs, LLC works with novice to well-established entrepreneurs, private label buyers, and brand owners.

Project 1

Startup Company

An entrepreneur with a startup company straight out of college had only a concept for a product that he believed had substantial marketplace potential. He preferred to focus on marketing and leave the science and production to others with that expertise.

BioChroma involvement:

  • Researched potential functional ingredients to fulfill the original idea.
  • Formulated a stable product.
  • Performed scientific studies showing efficacy and providing data for marketing material.
  • Selected a contract manufacturer based on volume, packaging requirements and quality specifications.
  • Negotiated pricing with the manufacturer.
  • Supervised scale-up with the manufacturer.
  • Performed all stability testing and ongoing quality control testing.
  • Helped establish the quality and regulatory system.
  • Retained for quality and regulatory system consulting.

Project 2

Established Brand Line

An entrepreneur with a small company and an established brand was ready to expand the product line and take her brand from a local to a national market. The company was not familiar with the government regulations concerning some of the current product line, which would certainly become an issue on a national scale.

BioChroma involvement:

  • Consulted on government regulations.
  • Tested original products and found microbial and stability issues.
  • Reformulated original product free of contamination and shelf stable.
  • Formulated additional products using customers' sensory requirements.

Project 3

Reformulation for a Cheaper Product Line

A brand owner who is routinely asked by retail buyers and brokers to create new products, fill customer demand, or replace a competitor’s product with quality issues needed help with a more price-conscious version of an existing retail product. The original formula was too costly to sell at discount store pricing, so a cheaper version was needed.

BioChroma involvement:

  • Researched potential ingredients to provide the same concept as the original formula but at a cheaper cost.
  • Researched potential packaging to provide the same aesthetic appeal as the original product but at a cheaper cost.
  • Formulated a stable product that mimicked the original product but cheaper to manufacture.
  • Searched for a contract manufacturer that had larger volume capabilities than what was used with the retail store version of the product, which again allowed for reduced costing.
  • Negotiated pricing with the manufacturer.
  • Supervised scale-up with the manufacturer.
  • Perform all ongoing quality control testing.

Project 4

Reformulation to Move Manufacturing into the USA

A broker managing a private label line of products had a beverage product being imported to the USA from Asia. The price point of the product was low, but the freight charges to move massive amounts of beverages across the Pacific and throughout the USA from the port were adding up. The broker did not own the formula, so moving production to manufacturers in the USA was not easy.

BioChroma involvement:

  • Reverse engineered the formula to match the current product.
  • Sourced ingredients and packaging.
  • Formulated a stable product that mimicked the original.
  • Found contract manufacturers in areas where the product was sold to reduce freight costs.
  • Negotiated pricing with the manufacturers.

The product was slightly more expensive to manufacture than he had been paying overseas but freight was extremely lower. Since this is a high volume and low margin product, these results are what he wanted. Overall, the venture was a success and the net profit increased.
